The Case for Heaven: Messages of Hope from People Who Touched Eternity
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (August, 1996)
Author: Mally Cox-Chapman
Average review score:

Comfort if you are grieving
This book has given me great comfort through several losses in my life, most notably my father's death. It tells story after story of skeptics examining experiences that can only be explained by the existence of an after-life. When we are grieving, and wondering "where a loved one has gone", it is comforting, even enthralling and exciting, to contemplate this "evidence" of hope. Grounded, well-researched, accessible and written with great heart, this book is a must-read, and must-own.

Thoughtful and well-written
"The Case for Heaven" is a thoughtful and well-written addition to the body of literature dealing with near-death experiences. The stories that the author details are moving and convincing. The chapter on physics is fascinating. A great book for questioning people who want more than just anecdotes.

A great comfort to skeptics and thinking people
When my mom died I read many books for comfort. I doubted the existence of the afterlife after a life spent with little spiritual teaching. This book looks at the concept of heaven from an historical point of view and presents a strong argument. Although I obviously wanted to believe her, she squelched many of my doubting voices with clear reasoning. This book was a great comfort. I was sad when I finally finished it, knowing that I couldn't read more.

Be Still, America... I Am God: From Out of the Rubble, Stories of Hope
Published in Paperback by Christian Pubns (December, 2001)
Author: Amy Bartlett
Average review score:

GREAT book!!!
The best book I've yet read on the September 11 attacks.
Amy Bartlett makes me feel I'm there. Great writing, a moving style, and genuine insight into the tragic events of that day. By all means pick up a copy and read it!

Amy got it right!
As one who was THERE, laboring for two weeks at ground zero as a firefighter and chaplain from Colorado, I can say without hesitation that Amy Bartlett captured the moment within the pages of her wonderful book.

I was moved to tears over and over as I read her descriptions of New Yorkers' reactions to this disaster. Amy allowed us to get inside her skin and relive this event as one who actually lived in Manhattan. I came as a volunteer, and only briefly touched the lives of ordinary people who lived through this. While my time was with the rescue workers, her focus was on the thousands of ordinary people who lost loved ones, and had to find the strength to go on living long after the last body part was recovered, and the last wreckage was removed.

Anyone who desires to drink deeply from the cup of sorrow endured by so many, and yet also drink freely from the waters of hope and renewal, should read this important book. History will record the facts of this tragedy, but Amy's book will forever capture the heart of the people, and their struggle to regain that which was lost. Her words give us strength to rise out of the ashes of the rubble and take the hand of God, who will never let go.

Superb Reading
I was a police officer in Maryland in the fall of 2001. I was privileged to command a group of officers from my agency for three days in New York during the relief effort.

Being there was a life-altering event. Reading this book brought all those feelings back. It is a cliché but in this instance an apt one, this book is a MUST read.

Looking at Luke Through the Eyes of Hope
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 1999)
Authors: Dave Hope, Lanny Taylor, and Claudia Hesse
Average review score:

Best commentary on the "Book of Luke" I've ever read.
Being a fan of "Kansas", I was very interested in purchasing this book and I was not disappointed. This book will challenge your Christian thinking in a way that it has probably never been challenged before. I think what I like the most about it,is the honesty and unique way the Gospel of Luke is presented. It's certainly not what you hear today from the majority of radio preachers. I can't wait for the next volume. Great Book!

Great viewpoint
I enjoyed this book big time. Dave's point of view and his ability to put things in a manner that I understand are so valuable. Having followed his career for years as a musician with Kansas it's good to see him continue on to use the talents that the Lord has blessed him with. Check this book out.

A Practical Yet Extremely Insightful 3rd Gospel Commentary
There have been very few times in my life when I just couldn't put a book down and this has been one of them. I followed the author's life while he was a bass guitar player for the progressive rock group KANSAS and revelled at his profession of faith in Christ in the early '80s. After reading his book just a few short weeks ago I can still hear and see Dave on the outside but on the inside is clearly a heart and mind that the Lord has sculpted into a formidable warrior in his army of believers. His interpretation of the first few chapters of Luke is witty, humorous and clearly from his heart. He writes as though he were there himself.

We Are Not Forgotten: George Anderson's Messages of Love and Hope from the Other Side
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (September, 1994)
Authors: Joel Martin, Patricia Romanowski, and George Anderson
Average review score:

Excellent Book - Highly Recommend to anyone grieving.
All the books by and about George Anderson are excellent and MUST READS for anyone experiencing the loss of a loved one. To be read with an open mind, - but in my case,(a former MAJOR skeptic) I literally began calling some of the people in the book and others that had met with him and was assured by ALL of them that the readings in the books were accurately reproduced. One suggestion - read "WE DON'T DIE" first, then "WE ARE NOT FORGOTTEN." "OUR CHILDREN FOREVER" is also excellent, and "LESSONS FROM THE LIGHT" is worth reading as well. Read the books & do your own research about George- he's been put to the test on TV (Donahue;Unsolved Mysteries/48 Hours) and they are worth having on tape. The readings in the books are very impressive, loaded with details he could not possibly have about strangers- it's easy to be skeptical and believe only what you can sense yourself. But George (who was close to death himself as a child)proves there is something MORE. And IF he were a "Con"- he wouldn't still be doing this at such high demand after 19 yrs. Read. Take comfort. Research it yourself. Speak to those who have spoken to him. "We are not Forgotten" includes the story of David Elliott's father's reading (he was also interviewed later on TV).This was a skeptical man who began his journey to George thru the "We Don't Die" book. THEY SAY ONLY DEATH & TAXES ARE CERTAIN. WRONG. Some people may cheat on their taxes, but none of us can cheat death. And until it affects us, we forget how many people are in pain everyday from grief. It doesn't end at the funeral, AND it does NOT end 2 weeks (or months) later either.Grief can last months, years, or a lifetime when you lose a loved one. If you have lost a loved one and are feeling the pain of the loss - read the books about George Anderson. They are worth reading AND re-reading!!! Open your mind and your heart. When you lose someone you love sometimes faith is not enough; proof is needed that your loved one is alright and George Anderson's books and readings help provide that. Excellent.

An insightful and amazing account of George's gift to others
I first read "We Don't Die" several years ago after a close friend had passed away and a co-worker recommended I read George Anderson's story. I thought I knew how to grieve, as I had lost several family members and friends over the previous few years. I was overwhelmed. As soon as I finished the first book, I read "We Are Not Forgotten". His communications are truly healing, even for those who have not had the fortune of meeting with him. Reading his books reassure us that dying is not the end and that loved ones are not forever gone. And for those people who don't particularly enjoy reading, let them know that his books are very simple and extremely fast reading. This should not be missed.

We Are Not Forgotten
George Anderson's books were a life saver for me and my family. After the unexpected death of my brother last year, these books helped us through the grieving process. The information offered so much hope and ultimately strengthened our spirituality. Joel Martin did such a wonderful job of proving George's credibility in George's first book, "We Don't Die", that we were compelled to read all his others. I highly reccommend these TREASURES to anyone who lost a loved one or who just needs to know more about life after life. I am eternally grateful to people like George Anderson. Not only has his gift helped so many people, but George's pure goodness shows through in his work. Because of George, I now know that my wonderful brother will live on forever, watching over us.

Transformational
Heaven's Back Row is a powerful journey into the depths of Bob Blackford's heart, the darkest parts of his soul and back out again. This book reveals the power of love, forgiveness, grace and God. I could not put it down!

I have shared this book with many people in South Africa who are facing their own struggle with AIDS and wrestling with sexual issues in their lives. They have been inspired, encouraged and many have found new hope after reading Bob's story.

I could not reccomend this book more highly!

Heaven's Back Row
This is a book that I couldn't put down from the beginning. It is a true and riveting account of Bob Blackford's life long struggle with his sexual identity. It is a story of God's healing power in a couple's life and how through brokenness and grace, Bob and Joanne Blackford are influencing others in the area of healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It is a an account of how God's healing miracles are being experienced today. Bob's brutal honesty and candid transparency is a templet for the Christian community. This is a book that speaks not only to the entire Christian community, but to society at large. It is a story of how God takes our brokenness and uses it to portray His message of hope to a hurting world.

Times Square Rabbi: Finding the Hope in Lost Kids' Lives
Published in Paperback by Hazelden Information Education (01 May, 1997)
Author: Yehudah Fine
Average review score:

Heartwarming
"Called a 'spiritual rabbi,' Fine helps struggling kids to find'transformations born of crisis.'  Applying principles of what he calls the Path to Meaning and Hope, Fine has developed an eight-step program 'useful to people... working through...spiritual emergencies.'  Based as they are on the teachings of the Hebrew philosopher Maimonides, Fine is clear that the steps he has designed are not a replacement for therapy or twelve-step programs.  They can, however, 'help you take the risk to discover who you are and where you are going.'  The stories of these kids and their lives on the street are told with honesty and respect, humor and faith.  Without being condescending, this is a book that highlights the indomitability of the human spirit.  Heart-warming!"  --NAPRA ReView - Fall, 1997  New Age Publication Alliance

A Hidden Treasure
I never thought I would read a heart pounding thriller based on a real life rabbi and gripping inspirational tales from the street. Want to learn about life after midnight in NYC, then read this book.It reads like a novel and yet is a true tale of NYC street life. Why this book is not a bestseller is beyond me. This is a powerful book that features true to life stories of teens caught in the web of drugs, prostitution, family violence and world that does not care. In that world walks Yehudah Fine, a real time hero whose human side is so real and vivid you feel after reading the stories in his book that you know him and the kids who he loves and cares about. This is a one of a kind read that will give you hope springing from the darkness forever. It will inspire you and make you cry.

Every parent should read this!
"Religion is for people who wish to avoid going to hell. Spirituality is for people who have been there." So wrote Abraham Twerski, founder of Gateway Rehabilitation Center, in his cover blub for Yehudah Fine's book, "Time Square Rabbi." Rabbi Fine (who prefers to be called "Yehudah") has that rare balance of religion and spirituality, combined with a down-to-earth love of sports, music, and life itself, that enables him to reach lost teenagers on the mean streets of New York.

His writing style is clear and poignant, combining good descriptive details with well-written dialogues. Each story illustrates one of the 8 steps in a recovery program that Yehudah has developed, based on the writings of Maimonides. Although the characters and stories are composites (to protect the kids' privacy), they are so well done that they virtually leap off the page.

Every parent should read this book. Yehudah pulls no punches about how these kids ended up on the streets. For many, it was an escape from unbearable home situations. In other cases, the parents kicked their kids out of the house with no idea what would happen to them out there. In still other cases, kids from "good homes" set out with high hopes and unrealistic fantasies, only to be victimized by the predators that roam "The Way Beyond." That's Yehudah's name for the street culture that exists in the same physical space as up-scale Manhattan, but in a different world entirely. Like real life, some of these stories have happy endings, others do not. But all of them will make you think. As the subtitle says, this is a book about finding hope.

The Vision Of His Glory

Author: Anne Graham Lotz

A Different View of Revelations
Unlike my thoughts that Revelations was a book that had no value to today's Christian, this book and study changed my whole thought process around this book. It contains the most persuasive reading on the authenticity of Jesus Christ and our position in His kingdom. It is a must reading for Christians and all others who are looking for that glimpse into the eternal life.

An excellent study!
Anne Graham Lotz delivers an excellent study of select passages from Revelation. This will stand alone as a personal devotional, study guide, and will add new light to the companion workbook/group study series. Her insights give better understanding of these last days!

There is hope!
This was a wonderfully written book. The book explains end times in terms we can all understand. It gives all of us expectations of a greater life beyond this one and hope for our eternal life. For those who are mystified from reading Revelations, you will enjoy this read. It helps explain some of the symbolism and numbers our human minds find puzzling and beyond reach.

Lily Pond: Four Years With a Family of Beavers
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (February, 1997)
Author: Hope Ryden
Average review score:

Share The Fun
I really didn't have much interest in beavers, but when I was given this book, Lily Pond, I decided to go ahead and read it. I finished it in 2 days, it was phenominal. The way she talked about the beavers was like a sitcom, but at the same time you learned so much. I didn't have to force myself to concentrate, like I normally do with text books, for one second, but the abundance of information I got from this book never fails to amaze me. I have to give Hope Ryden 2 thumbs up for this book. It's one you can't put down no matter how hard you try. I was really sad when it was over.

One of My All-Time Favorite Books
This is a wonderful book by a wonderful naturalist. Follow a beaver family through seasons of plenty and hardship. Ryden weaves a delightful and moving tale while at the same time maintaining her integrity as a keen observer of animal behavior.

Heart rendering look into the world of the Beaver.
An insightful look into the saga of a Beaver family. The lives of this Beaver family comes alive through the eyes of author Hope Ryden. You'll begin to feel you're right there with her as she studies this Beaver family over the course of four years painstaking work. Ms. Ryden does an excellent job of conveying what this family of Beavers is up to and you learn an outstanding amount of information about the natural history of Beavers. You become both attached to Ms. Ryden and the family of beavers, feeling both her joy and pain as you see their lives progress before you. I even shed some tears..it was that good. Thanks Ms. Ryden, for an outstanding piece of nature writing

The Lost Village of Central Park (Mysteries in Time)
Published in Library Binding by Silver Moon Pr (December, 1999)
Authors: Hope Lourie Killcoyne and Mary Lee Majno
Average review score:

A Lost Craft Re-Discovered in a Impressive First Work
I had though the art of captivating storytelling in the realm of children's historical fiction was long gone. The last and one of the best was Ben and Me. Not to mention the fact that intelligent prose directed toward but not insulting children has disappeared with the likes of greats like E.B. White, Judy Blume & Madeline L'Engle... until now that is. Meticulous research has allowed Hope Killcoyne to create a captivating historical backdrop that most New Yorkers weren't even aware of including myself. Even as the story unfolded I couldn't help feel a sense of sorrow knowing the timely end to what was probably a fascinating culture within the tapestry of NY. Nevertheless, Killcoyne takes what might have just been an interesting footnote in NY lore and weaves a modern folk tale of ingenious promise and heart. Characters well developed for any novel not to mention one for young adults, add depth and almost tangible realism to a time and era long forgotten and sometimes better off forgotten. Hope Killcoyne places her characters in a small pocket of the American landscape dwarfed by slavery and the dawn of Civil War allowing us to glimpse what might have been and what should be in a world too often blurred with self-interest and prejudice. Although some readers might be wary of the melodrama of a culturally diverse Utopia Killcoyne has pictured, there is nothing contrived about the story and intent behind this book. A highly recommended book for any young or old reader... from any walk of life.

Seneca Village: History Should Always Teach Our Children
There are few opportunities offered our children to learn an important lesson about both our own past and our nature as individuals than that delivered by Hope Lourie Killcoyne in her gifted story, "The Lost Village of Central Park." Set in mid-nineteenth-century New York City, at the cusp of the construction of that seminal landmark of modern America, Central Park, Ms. Killcoyne's lyrical narrative traces the factual history of Seneca Village, a real establishment in which African-American and Irish immigrants somehow co-existed peacefully in pre-Civil War America. Creating compelling and believable characters, Ms. Killcoyne provides today's pre-teens with an invaluable and unique perspective on an important era in American social development, one which was cut curiously short by the idiosyncratic yet poetically inevitable advancement of New York City, through the creation of Central Park. The Park stands today, a monument to New York civic achievement; what is lost is Seneca Village, perhaps an even more meaningful yet necessarily ephemeral reflection of all that is possible, yet also lost, in the American dream.

Good story, very educational... a good read for the kids.
Having lived in New York my entire life, I was surprised to find out about Seneca Village. I was never taught about the time, place, and events that surrounded the demise of that area of the city. The author successfully tells the story from the point of view of two young girls, one black and one white, and the strength of their friendship. It's a great way to teach children about their past. There's a lot going on here... plenty to use the characters again and turn it into a series. I'd certainly pick up the next one for my niece!

A New Hope
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (January, 1997)
Authors: Sara Bonnett Stein and Golden Books
Average review score:

The last in the series.
The final book in this special edition Golden Books series of the first STAR WARS trilogy. RETURN OF THE JEDI finishes the saga begun in A NEW HOPE and continued in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Like the other two books in the series, this book successfully condenses the plot of the movie into a small children's book. Contains some great pictures. Alas, there is no mention of the speeder-bike chase and there are no pictures of the Sarlacc. That's about the only negative aspect of this book. If you've read the first two, this one is a must.

Great intro to Star Wars.
This children's book is a great introduction to STAR WARS. The book successfully compacts most of the important plots of the movie. It also contains some great pictures to go along with the words. A few of the words are difficult for real-young, youngsters to understand, but other than that, that's the only drawback.

An incredibly illustrated book!
My 3 year old loves this book. He carries it around with him, spending at least 20 minutes a day looking at the pictures asking me to read it to him. The art work in this book really brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book for children and Star Wars Collectors.
